Biography

Matt Allen is a Houston trial lawyer who represents personal injury plaintiffs and businesses in commercial disputes. He has broad experience with complex, high-stakes litigation and has obtained multimillion dollar victories for plaintiffs and defendants while working at some of the best law firms in the country. Whether fighting for a personal injury victim, or a company being treated unfairly, Matt’s sole focus is achieving the best possible outcome for his client.

Matt learned the value of hard work early. He enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17 and left for boot camp shortly after high school. Matt’s five years on active duty instilled a commitment to excellence and taught him to meet challenges with preparation, hard work, and grit. Matt applied these lessons and excelled. He was promoted to sergeant in less than three years and was consistently ranked highly among his fellow Marines. In 2003, Matt was part of the 1st Radio Battalion detachment attached to 5th Marine Regiment during the invasion of Iraq, for which he was awarded the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

After his enlistment, Matt attended the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated with a 3.96 GPA, which earned him Highest Honors and an invitation to the Phi Beta Kappa society. While in Austin, Matt designed tools to help military personnel place insignia on their uniforms. He was awarded 4 U.S. Patents and sold more than 190,000 in military exchanges before selling the company. After college, Matt attended law school at the University of Houston Law Center, where he graduated in the top 3% of his class and was elected by his peers to be the Managing Editor of the Houston Law Review. Matt was also selected for the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Barons based on his academic performance, and his law review article was published and received the Texas Bar Foundation’s prestigious, statewide award for Outstanding Law Review Article.

After law school, Matt secured two highly coveted federal clerkships where he learned invaluable lessons about effective written and oral advocacy. He clerked for one year for U.S. District Judge George P. Kazen in Laredo, Texas, where the federal courthouse is now named the George P. Kazen Federal Building and United States Courthouse—a testament to Judge Kazen’s service and stature. Next, Matt clerked for two years for Judge Harold R. DeMoss, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (one step below the U.S. Supreme Court) and regularly traveled to New Orleans with Judge DeMoss to assist with oral arguments.

After his clerkships, Matt spent the better part of a decade at the two best law firms the State of Texas has produced: Baker Botts and Susman Godfrey. There, Matt prosecuted and defended a wide variety of complex, high-stakes cases with some of the best lawyers in the country, including cases involving catastrophic personal injuries, the antitrust and securities laws, patent infringement, climate change, large oil & gas disputes, professional negligence, and misappropriation of trade secrets, among others.

Matt and Knox formed their firm to help people who have been injured and companies that are being treated unfairly. Matt and Knox feel privileged to represent their clients and encourage you to contact them to discuss your case.

When not working for his clients, Matt usually is spending time with his wife Megan and their son and daughter, and he occasionally finds time to fish the bays around Galveston.
