Attorney Referrals
What Is an Attorney Referral?
At Allen Nunnally, we pride ourselves on our good relationships with other lawyers and law firms locally and further afield. Our colleagues often refer us clients in exchange for referral fees. A referral fee is a percentage of the attorneys’ fees we earn from a case referred to us. In Texas, attorneys can pay referral fees for proportionate legal services or joint responsibility over a case.
Who Refers Cases to Allen & Nunnally?
Our team of trial attorneys receives referrals from many different kinds of lawyers. We may hear from criminal defense attorneys, employment attorneys, family law attorneys, probate attorneys, civil litigation attorneys, and even other personal injury attorneys who need assistance with cases they may not be as familiar or experienced in. Often, these lawyers have clients with multiple legal needs: an injured oilfield worker, for example, may need both a personal injury attorney and an employment attorney. Or a less experienced personal injury attorney may realize they need Allen & Nunnally’s years of experience to fight a big case for a client.
When attorneys refer cases, it shows that they care about client outcomes. The client’s best interests matter the most, and sometimes that means referring a client to other lawyers. Allen & Nunnally’s policy of being first to fight for our clients stands true regarding both cases we refer out and cases we handle for our clients directly.
Does Allen & Nunnally Refer Cases to Other Attorneys?
Yes, our firm does refer cases to other attorneys. We often have clients with multiple legal claims who need more than one type of lawyer. Our typical referral arrangements are with firms who handle the following areas of law:
- Criminal law
- Employment Law
- Family law
- Probate and Trusts
- Attorneys from out of state, not licensed in Texas
We have found our referral relationships mutually beneficial for our clients, our firm, and the other firms involved.
At Allen & Nunnally, we pride ourselves on our good lawyer relationships in referral situations. We maintain accurate records so that you can keep track of your client’s case progress. We provide regular case updates to you and the client. We also provide full accounting when it comes to handling fees. We take the referral relationship seriously, and we never try to take clients from the attorneys to whom we refer or receive clients. When we accept a referral relationship, we understand the level of trust it entails, and we live up to our promises to clients and other attorneys. If you’re interested in referring us clients, know that we follow ethical legal practices and do right by referring attorneys.
Texas Law Expressly Permits Referral Fee Relationships
We use the referral system because it’s good for our clients and because it’s expressly permitted by Texas law. The law says that we have to agree with the other lawyer whether the fee division is (1) proportionate to the services each lawyer provides or (2) made by lawyers who will jointly represent the client for the case. In addition, we have to provide you with a written agreement explaining the referral arrangement. As former servicemen, we take our legal responsibilities very seriously, and we ensure that our referral arrangements comply with Texas law.
Benefits of Lawyer Referrals with Allen & Nunnally
Our lawyers, both former Marines, love to get referrals because they mutually benefit those involved. There are a few very good reasons to form referral relationships with other attorneys, such as those at our firm:
- Find the right fit for a client’s needs
- Choose a lawyer who handles a specific type of case, such as oilfield accidents
- Build relationships and foster business connections
- Gain access to more resources
- Remove personal risk if a client’s case involves financial burden or an unfamiliar area of law
- Work with the best lawyers around
We’d love to work with lawyers who understand the benefits of a referral relationship.
